Travelling is one of those luxuries in life where not everyone can afford to spend thousands of dollars to travel to the other side of the world to enjoy a lovely adventurous holiday. Many costs come into the equation, hidden cost that some people don't think of and next thing you know you don't have any money to spend while your on holiday. Also you might be a student, you have a loan to pay off and and you have minimal income coming in from you 1 day a week job, how do you pay for you flights on a minimum wage you ask? I'm going to let you in on some of my tips and secretes on how I save my money so you don't notice you money slipping away out of you account in to your savings. Also I will talk about some other tips to help you budget for your holidays or working holidays.

Open up a savings.

First of all if you don't have a savings account go get one now I have about three of them. One to pay my student loan off, one for my travel expenditures and one for my life savings. When opening up our bank account look for one that has high interest rates and low fees. Most banks will charge a fee but its usually a withdrawal fee or admin fee. Sometimes I find banks with a withdrawal fee quite handy when saving for a big holiday or working holiday because I wont touch it.

Save your change.

Whether you like to carry cash or use your eftpos card I always pocket the change and put it in to my savings. at the end of each day I empty my bag and pockets of all my lose coin change and stick it in my money box. you will be surprised on how much you can save by doing this when your money box is full take it down to the bank and deposit it in to your savings. also I've managed to set this up with my bank account as well and the end of every day it will round all my purchases up to the nearest dollar and transfer that change in to my savings. (This is only available as some banks.)

Take a decent amount out of your wage.

Weather you get paid monthly or weekly the day you get paid split your money up and transfer it in to your savings. Depending on how much you get paid I think 10% is a good amount. I always make sure I have budgeted so I have some money going in to my savings.

Transfer before pay day.

I have just started doing this but the day before pay day say if I have $54.60 left in my account I will now transfer that $50 in to my savings. Is a good way to just get that extra money in to you account and when your pay comes through it was like it never disappeared.

A couple of tips

  • A couple of months before your trip ban yourself from buying anything that you cant take with you. On most trips they only allowed a 20kg bag so if you can't fit in the bag don't buy it and at the end of the month put it in you saving's. I have been doing this since the start of the year as I could be gone for two years, what's the point of buying something you cant enjoy for two years.
  • Budget, budget, budget. I doesn't matter if you get paid monthly or weekly over look your spending and make changes to your budget every month. Always look where your money is disappearing you could be spending to much money on food that month.
  • Make your lunch every day, Just buy making my lunch every day I'm saving myself up $40 a week over a month that's $160 you could be saving for your holiday.
  • Always make the plans, or look for the cheapest option. When going out with friends on the weekend try to make the plans yourself, that way you can budget for the day and you will know exactly where you money will be spent. Also choose a place to eat where it is cheap but tasty, or look for the cheapest option on the menu sometimes its cheaper to get and entrée and a side than an main course.

I hope some of these tip helped some of you out there even some of them are handy in day to day life, they are good habits to have. If you have any good money habits or tips please leave them down below, I would love to hear from you.
