After my post on Monday I thought today would be a good day to list the things I have learnt in life. I read this post on Postcards from Rachel and loved some of the things she wrote down; I loved some of them so much I had to steal them because it related to me. And I always enjoy reading advice from a complete stranger

Nearing on 24 some time I like to think I have my life together and know everything about it, well because I’m wise and everything, not. I still do some really stupid things at the prime age of 23, I think that’s the beauty of life, you never stop learning. Because I stopped counting my age at 21 (seriously I have to think about it when people ask me how old I am.) I'm going to list 21 things I have learnt in the last 21 years.

So let’s jump in.

1. Someone will always know someone else and they will know you so respect everyone and treat everyone with kindness, because otherwise it will bite you in the ass one day.

2. Laugh at yourself once in a while, it is a wonderful gift and it instantly boosts your mood.

3. You can’t make everyone happy. Someone somewhere will always be disappointed and you will eventually make peace with that.

4. Life experiences are more valuable than material possessions.

5. Time is your most precious resource… don’t waste it.

6. Good friends will stick around, even if you don’t see each other often or you move away, you can still pick up where you left off whenever you do have time together.

7. Get rid of the negativity in your life and you’ll instantly feel lighter.

8. A lousy day can be turned around by spending all day watching DVD's in bed and a hot mug of tea.

9. There will always be times when bad things happen to you, but ultimately it is your choice to be happy. It takes a lot of work and it’s easy to fall into the habit of being fed up or miserable, but make the effort and it will be worth it. Choose to be happy.

10. You’re always going to be busy, but don’t use it as an excuse to avoid spending time with friends and family. You’ll regret it when they’re not around.

11. Don’t put off doing the things you really want. If you dream about visiting Rome, London or America, save up and book it. Experiences are everything.

12. If it scares the crap outta you, it’s probably worth pursuing. Unless this is a person we’re talking about. Then you should run.

13. Adult acne is real.

14. Always take time to sleep and exercise, you don’t know how important it is to you. It will also help you mentally function properly.

15. Parents are always right. Always!

16. You can drive yourself crazy comparing your life to other people’s and feeling that you should have a better job, be engaged, married, have a family, travel the world, but just remember that everyone has something they envy or admire in another person. You never know, they might secretly wish they had your life.

17. Stand up for yourself and whatever it is you believe in.

18. Take your own advice more often – More often than not, that ‘feeling’ or ‘instinct’ you have is right.

19. Some things are best learned by doing but read up on topics you actually want to know about. Read some books, articles and blogs. Ask questions too, people love giving advice.

20. Always be a kid at heart. Have a snowball fight, play dress-up, and have a sleepover with your best friends (this time you can add wine to the night in). These things will never get old no matter how much you do.

21. You will realize how blessed you are.

What have you learned as you've gotten older (and wiser)?
