A few weeks ago I got a a strange surprise email from a place called Bird on a Wire.

It had turned I had won a free picnic for two!!!

I had never been to this rotisserie chicken restaurant but had always wanted to (they on have 2 stores in town, a good 20 minute drive from my house). The picnic was absolutely divine and adorable, and the food was just to die for, they had given us a whole rotisserie chicken that could easily feed 4 and a salad box that had three different salads, a lettuce and chickpea salad, a slaw and a cauliflower salad. It didn't stop there they catered to my gluten free diet and had rolls, sauces and a white chocolate and almond brownie for desert. It was spectacular and so yummy that I had to go back and try something different.

We visited again on at Saturday during the lunch time rush, there was a few people that had ordered before us so it was a good test to see how long we would have to wait for our meal.

I ordered a large salad with a little chicken ($20), my salad consisted of Roasted cauliflower, spiced chickpea, green peppers, coconut, coriander green salad with yogurt raita dressing, and Mexican Slaw with Chipotle Mayo. The salad had just the right amount of sweet and salty from the dressing I had just wish It had more dressing to make the flavours more intense. The vegetables in the slaw were fresh with that perfect amount of crunch, and the spicy kick, It stayed fresh and crunch even the next day.

Mr J ordered the special burger ($15), crumbed free range chicken thigh, house made pear pickle, beer battered onion ring, blue cheese mayo, free range bacon & rocket. Mr J exclaimed how good his burger was, he said it was the best burger he had ever had.

To our amazement we only had to wait 6 minutes for our food (it would have been shorter if we didn't order the burger). Excellent service might I also add, they served us quite quickly but still gave us plenty of time to check out the menu.

Because we were having a picnic we only spent a few minutes in the lunch bar. The building was quite small and thus not a lot of room to sit and eat, so it is usually easier to get takeaway and find somewhere else to eat. Inside it was styled in a very quirky manner, there were photo frames covering the walls, potted plants scattered around and lined with yellow tiles. Not only a place that was clean and green, it is a happy place that to me is the embodiment of summer. What I like the most was that the Salads and Burger came in all recycled cardboard boxes, while it may not be the most elegant way to present the meal, it is definitely nice knowing that you are helping out the environment.

While the price was a bit on the steep side for what was essentially a take out lunch, I got a large portion and easily had enough salad for my lunch the next day. We also both thought that the quality of the food (i.e. free range chicken and all organic products) was a lot better than your average take out and that the price was almost reasonable.

This is my first attempt at a restaurant review, so bare with me. I really love food and want to write these reviews as a way to document the amazing food I have in my travels. When I go out to eat there are 5 things I look for; Taste, Appeal, Ambiance, Service and Value.

I am happy to say that Bird on a Wire excelled as a healthy choice of a takeaway meal al though I do find I slightly over priced I would defiantly pay the price to know I am having a healthy organic meal instead of fuelling my body with chemicals.
